Healing and Spell Damage Gear to Become One

For you frequent forum dwellers this will be old news. When I first saw this post and saw the changes to healing and spell damage gear I didn’t pay much attention to it. It is early alpha and the pics shown could mean anything, right? Well finally we may have some clarification. In the upcoming issue of PCGamer, Tom Chilton (Kalgan) sheds some light on why these changes are happening and how they will work:

PC Gamer: What else is changing?
Tom Chilton (Kalgan) : We’re also going to be doing away with spell-damage only type gear. We’ll be moving to a system that, as part of your talents, will let players convert healing into spell-damage and vice-versa as part of their talents. That way they can use the exact same gear, but their talents just adapt what it does.”

That is quoted from MMO-Champion. I couldn’t find the interview online, I’m guessing you’ll have to buy the magazine to see it. Here is a look at current game items and enchants and how they change in the Alpha, the left image is current and the right is alpha:

So what does this mean really and why is it needed? Does this mean that healers can have one set of gear and just respec as needed? does this mean that healers and dps casters will be fighting for the same gear? I like the idea of it, but have to wonder what types of problems it will cause and how Blizzard will counter those problems. Do you see this as a good change?

  1. Hell yeah, this could make it even easier for having a pve/pvp set. You will be having 2 wardrobe slots (2 full item sets, swappable at all times.)
Like this you can have (for example)2 builds: moonkin and resto.
Furthermore you got 2 sets: pve (caster and pvp (caster).
Like this you can even fullfil 4 roles: Pve Healer, PvP Healer, PvE dps, PvP nuke ^^

  2. This is horrible for people who can’t DPS but only heal!

The +healing gear is great because it is higher numbers than the +heal/spell gear

    This will eviscerate pally healers!

  3. Not really Daddywarbuck, the idea behind it is that although your Healing number on your Character sheet goes down… Talents and the Spell Coefficients come into play so that your heals are going to be very close to what they already are.

This change along with the Crit/Hit rating change is making all the gear more useful to more people, so loot is never wasted.

  4. read well “will let players convert healing into spell-damage and vice-versa as part of their talents” they dident say they will change gear stats.

  5. That’s not why it’s horrible. Even more mages are going to roll on healing items like Ausele’s Light Channeler and the Warp Scarab Brooch above now that healing is inseparable from DPS. And the new healing power ring enchant is really crappy, the spellpower one is +12 dmg/heal and uses way less mats. I don’t mind changes to the armor, but neck/ring/trinkets should be left as is.

  6. what hit/crit rating changes?

  7. guys are you dumb? the same way that mages roll on supposed “healing gear” you will be able to roll on dps gear. and for ppl like me who have a shaman this is great for you dont have to swap all of your equipment when respeccing from resto to elemental. i think this is even more obvious for a priest who doesnt rely on crit as a shadow, so if you have superb healing equipment you can just respecc for the raid if needed and voila: you have superb shadow equipment as well. furthermore you save money on enchants etc. etc. pls think before you post some crap about a change that will most likely benefit most ppl. it will also make it easier to gear up in quests, because they only need to implement 7 rewards to make at least one viable for EVERY CLASS AND SPECC! one plate for healers, one for melees, one mail for resto/ele, one for enhancer/hunter, one leather for boomkin/resto, one for feral/rogue, and only one piece of cloth. i was always disappointed when i did a group quest or long questline only to find out that there were no rewards for my class/specc!

  8. This is a little scary at first look, but so long as I have the same DPS as I would have had with splldmg specific gear, then I’m fine. If it messes with that because of their inability to balance (which is always there anyway), or I have to waste talent points just to get my spell damage to where it should be because I’m using +healing gear and have to convert, then I’ll be pissed. Unless everyone has to waste talent points on conversions. In which case, they better give us two TP per level this round instead of one.
Ok, so I’m really worried about this. Heh.

  9. In this example (boots)would make holy priest op.. priest can fully utilizes every stat esp mana regen, on the other hand mages an locks don’t really need every stat rather more of a certain one including the spell damage, lock will lose out on the stam, and mage would lose out on the intel. Shadow priest would love this, yum yum.

too broad based imo.. What blizzard need to do is have relevant drop in relation to the class make up. I’m tired of spending hours to finally kill a raid boss seeing shammy crap drop when we have no shammies in the group.

  10. about time they brung healing and spell damage in the World. lol

  11. My least favorite thing in game is during raiding rolling on tier pieces during a progression. The chances of you getting something are so much lower when everyone else can use an item. I’d rather it be an item I simply can’t use than an item I can and lose the roll on.
Of course, I’d rather it be something I can use and win, but whatever.

Now everyone will be competing for everything. Except tanking gear. Hmm, maybe I should go tankspec.

  12. people are so dumb these days…. what their clearaly trying to say… when a healer wants to change to dps…instead of wasting time and getting gear…the healing gear will change to dps gear depending on ur specc…so blizzard did a great favor for us :)

  13. but the bonus stuff will be abit lower then the regular sets

  14. I applaud this, as an elemental shaman, I will, for once, see some gear dropping readily in raids that isn’t cloth/leather that I can use.

  15. i honestly think this is the worst thing they could have done; healing is a thankless job, and now we’ll suffer for it thanks to some idiot thinking “oh, lets have fun watching the chaos unfold as priests slowly become redundant thanks to greedy mages, warlocks, and even shadow priests”. it’s all very well people compare the stats and say “oh, that doesn’t have enough intelect for a mage” or stamina for a warlock, but in reality, when you’re in a pug or even in a guild doing end game content, you can’t escape the loot whoring. this is going to put even more stress on end game guilds and raid leaders having to keep an eye on their raiders gear and making sure some asshat doesn’t decide to go all elitest on everyone, which in that regard will make raiding a less friendly environment. the raid leaders will be over stressed; the raiders will feel deprived, and blizz gets to sit back saying “everything’s working as intended.”

  16. This is horrible for people who can’t DPS but only heal!

The +healing gear is great because it is higher numbers than the +heal/spell gear

    This will eviscerate pally healers!

How so? They already stated in the end with specing for healing or DPS all the gear will have teh same +heal/damage as it does now. All it does it make it so that You can decent heal gear without having to hope the 1 single heal gear piece of the 6 bosses drops this run, all you have to worry about is whether cloth/leather/etc drops because now instead of making it so theres mage gear or priest gear it will be mage and priest combined gear…

Which doesn’t take away from your chances, look at it this way all priests needed to get a heal and a dps set of gear, which means they where the only ones rolling on healing cloth but where also rolling on dps cloth as well… So basicly it made it so that priests could take any cloth they wanted to but mages where limited to just the DPS cloth… Now it is changing to where all the healing cloth is becoming DPS cloth so that mages can also roll on all gear… now you think well that takes away from healers odds…but also remember that now healers ONLY need 1 set as a pose to two…

So in conclusion mages now arnt limited to 1/2 the cloth rolls, and priest now dont have 8 less bank slots because they no longer need 2 sets… Its a win win

  17. the only thing any of us really need to worry about is the mnot balancing this right, which we shouldn’t even have to worry about

all that needs to be done is change a few formulas, fix the old +healing and +dmg to the new spellpower level, tweak the spells, and viola! new (and old) stat
