New Shadows in WotLK Alpha

admin June 24 2008 12:09 am 10 Comments

Crazy posted a SS of some shadows a couple weeks ago and I had totally forgot about them until Sabotage posted more today. It’s not a huge new feature. To be honest I had no clue what Crazy was talking about until I loaded up WoW to see what the big deal was with our current shadows. Most won’t care about this, but there is a growing number of people that cry for a graphics engine overhaul. Maybe this will tide them over.

Thanks to Crazy and WotLKWiki for the images.

    Wow those are a huge improvement I like them.

    I really hope that is something I can turn off, I really don’t want my frame-rate suffering for something so…useless (in terms of game play). I’m sure if I had a better computer I would really appreciated it (from an aesthetic standpoint the undefined shadows always have bothered me), but right now I don’t, so the technical implications worry me.

    You will probably be able to turn it off on Video options. I myself is realy excited about it, it will realy amplify the “feeling of epicness”.

    I don’t think this is real, considering I haven’t seen these shadows in any other WotLK picture.

    @Sidney, yes, it is real, its an console command i think, forgot what tho.

    WOW! I love it!

    How can i get those shadows?

    /console extShadowQuality 0-6

    Don’t see a huge drop in performance thought atm setting 6 turns all textures white on my 8800GT, also seems a bit buggy atm with for example only players and mobs casting shadows – when a mob is on top of a hill the shadow floats somewhere far off. Does help loads to spot Fel Reavers though :P

    can i just ask something like how is this gonna work with WOTLK with these new grafics and areas without the expansion i meen most people arnt gonna get WOTLK right away will it mess up people without it or they gonna have a patch and and alot of stuf and how r they gonna block people from going on the boats and going to northrand please explain

    @BEs Fo Life

    People without WotLK will get this the same as those with the expansion. The majority of WotLK additions are available to all, but Northrend and leveling above 80 (along with the things that go with it) will not. You can get on the boats, but like what happens if you try to go to a Burning Crusade area without the expansion, you will be teleported away from the area as soon as the boat starts moving.

    Also, the new graphics can be turned off, and I’d wager they’d be entirely client based. They would be in no way necessary and if they did not include them in such a way, it would have no real significance in terms of “messing up people”.
