DKinfo Design-a-Rune Contest [VOTE!!]
THERE IS A POLL AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST!!! VOTE!!!!
Due to the lateness of the poll, voting will extend an extra day to give 2 full weeks of voting.
Here are the entries for the Design-a-Rune contest. The response has been overwhelming! When I thought up the contest the main rule I wanted in place before I added a prize was to have at least 5 entries. You guys came through in force! Here is how the voting will work:
1.) Below the entries will be listed in the order in which they came in. Number 1 only means that this person was the first email I received.
2.) Scroll through them all! At the end you will vote based on which number was your favorite.
3.) I will present the runes just as I received them. The only changes that could possibly have been made would be to resize any exceptionally large image file. I will not add any comments or explanation.
4.) VOTE! Anyone and EVERYONE can vote 1 time per IP address and you can only vote for one rune design.
5.) Until there is a winner voted on, the rune designs will only be recognized by their number. This is mainly because not everyone is either registered with the site and/or did not supply their DKinfo screen name. After the winner is notified by email their identity will be announced.
6.) THE WINNER WILL RECEIVE A 60 DAY WORLD OF WARCRAFT GAME CARD! (note, at present I am working on the logistics of purchasing a EU version of the game card. If those arrangements cannot be made, then the winner (if EU) will receive thirty (30) US Dollars via PAYPAL (winner must have Paypal).

I am so voting for #13.
My fav.
Err 12 Sorry… can’t edit it seems.

Those are all great entries. May the best design win.
I was very excited seeing the runes and there are some really great ones. But did anybody take a closer look at no. 9´s Unholy?
Don´t believe that Nazi signs will do it in Wotlk. Yeah yeah, flame me by telling that´s an old sun symbol but even when it is seen so it is not very creative then.
Excuse my english but there are some german readers out there like me and no. 9 should be removed in my opinion. I´d would get banned anyway in nearly whole europe i guess. ^^ Just my two cents…
Wow, very nice job all. I’m loving 22 and 23!
Demon, yes I agree, number 9 is somewhat offensive, I even replied to the submitter that he probably wouldnt catch many votes with the swastika. But, as you even said, that symbol has more than one meaning, so in fairness I allowed it. Simply don’t vote for it and the problem is solved.

Im voting for #8
#18 all the way. It looks more professional than all the other ones. Plus, it has a very very distinctive “Inactive” mode for all of the runes, which would be very easy to see in-game.
I got to say #18 looks really nice…
And #12 in a close second
Vote goes to #5
Voting for #7.
18 all the way :D
Voting for number 23
18 involves probably 80% Blizzard artwork which makes it questionable. If you had a template for each person to use, this contest may be more fair. While layout is king and props for layout, I just think its more of a winner because of layout and not because of the runes.
@spock
While I agree that if I has superimposed my runes on the DK interface, I may have garnered a couple more votes than the paltry amount I have now, don’t let that detract from the superiority of 18’s rune design. There’s a lot going for them that I could consume a whole post on discussing (I have a guess as to who designed them too).
2nd rule: “Make them simple enough that they are visibile inside a portrait bar. Meaning, dont make them too thin in any one area, you want something full enough that a refresh on a rune cooldown can be seen.”
Not sure I agree with knocking someone for illustrating one of the key requirements of this contest.
Either way Futhark makes a valid point that 18’s runes stand on their own regardless of the included Blizzard artwork. I’d even go so far as to argue that including the Blizz portrait bar would actually hurt some of the other entries rather than help them.
I think 18’s design is very well done. the only one I would change is the death rune. It seems a bit plain in regards to the other 3, which are fantastic
18. Looks nice.
@ozz
I don’t understand your first point. It doesn’t say use Blizzard’s art inside of your images.
@Rawr
I agree. I don’t think having the number 7 as a basis of all four runes is very unique. While execution looks good, I don’t think Blizzard’s runes look anything alike per rune and well I already spoke of my other opinion.
There are some good looking runes in a couple of these but I just get lost in the sizing of some, etc… they just lose their appeal.
@Spock
You do realize that’s a scythe right? Not a 7
I personally think that every contestant should have put their runes on the interface, not only because it makes it more professional looking, but it also fills in one of the key elements of the competition, the runes have to be distinct enough to be easily seen in-game and in contrast with the interface background.
#3’s Blood Rune looks like the Monster Energy Drinks logo. :)
To me, they were the ones that resembled what they were, so I went with #3.
# 14 is off of ultima online (A old 90s video game). it should be disqualified. friggin cheater.

#7 is cool
#18, Very nicely done, lvery nice shine to them.
@ozox
I’m flattered that you think my original rune designs can be confused by those made by professionals! Much appreciated.
18 all teh way and not becuase of the DK frame i think teh rune designs are very well done and i also think it deserves to win and apparently alot of others do to.. :)

Im gonna put in my vote for 18. Its imo the best looking of all of them, not really because of the blizzard stuff (although that does give a look in perspective), but simply because it has some good detail and it looks like most work is put into it.
One but though,
I would want my runes to be very distinct so i can, in the blink of an eye, see what rune is what. And i find that to be lacking slightly when i compare the frost and unholy rune.
They both have this half circle bottom half going for them.
Thats my only remark for 18. But i notice a lot of the contestees have done that. (Number 1 for example hasnt, and you can very clearly see which shape belongs to which type)
Number 12 rips some art from the actual runes on the Greatsword of the Ebon Blade that is in the beta right now.
blizzard will not let us down and make the right choices and when WOTLK come out we will be very happy and teh patches to come will make us even happier. :):):):):):):):)

Number 18 is very nice, maybe the scythe in the death rune could be rotated about 15-20 degrees clockwise to make it less “plain”
other than that, very well done.
