Northrend Flying, The Lich King, WoW-Heroes
So the Alpha information is slowing down, which is making me dig in deeper to find information to post on. Found some random stuff in the form of blue posts that you might find interesting. Dahnek, in our forums, shared a Bornakk post about the cost of flying in Northrend:
The current plan is to allow players to use their flying mounts once a character hits level 77 in Northrend. I understand you feel they don’t add to aspects of the game that you are looking for, but we believe they do add to the game and we are building the new content with the ability to use them in mind.
You will be able to use the same mounts that you current use in Outland. There will be some sort of process to complete to be able to use the mount once a character hits level 77, but the exact details are undecided at this time. If you are referring to needing a large sum of gold to use them, sort of like a new tier of flying skill, that isn’t the current plan.
EU CM Wryxian echoed that statement with a similar post:
Well there’s definitely no current plan to make people pay huge amounts to fly again in Northrend; opening the skies of Northrend to flight won’t be the next big money sink.
As you’ve mentioned, at the Worldwide Invitational it was stated that we’ll be able to fly our current mounts — and I assume, Druid flight form — at level 77. Regarding the “defrosting” that was referred to at the developer panel, it was pretty clear from the way it was mentioned that it was a relatively off-the-cuff remark, intended only as an example of one possibility to achieve this.
The only thing we can take from this is that currently it is planned that somethingwill happen at level 77 to enable flight in Northrend but exactly what that something is, has yet to be revealed.
So bottom line is you won’t have to worry about some gawd awful amount of money to save up in order to fly in Northrend.
Via Blue post, I found this fantastic rendering of the Lich King. Not sure of the story behind the image, it is from a Worldofraids gallery. I suggest following that link to WoR as the image quality is way better. I reduced it to host it here.
Finally, there is a new website out that is a lot like Be Imba, it parses WoWArmory and then analyzes your gear and tells you how bad you suck. Try it out, it’s called WoW-Heroes.

“About a year ago, we posted a stunning CGI (Computer-generated imagery) representing a female night elf, and the CGSociety site through which this image has been found also hosts quite a few notheworthy WoW themed pictures.
Below is a selection of images from CGSociety 2D Illustration forum, most of them have been made using photoshop.”
That’s the story behind the image.
Nice thanks! Worldofraids was remvoed from my Google Reader when they redid the site, I’ve been too lazy to put it back in (doing that now) Awesome pics.
I’m curious as to whether I’m the only person who has an issue with this. So you blitz through Outland, hit 70, get your mount and think “hey to Northrend I go” only to not be able to use your mount for another 7 levels.
So we don’t have to sink a ton of gold to be able to fly, that’s good and all, but it’s still a pain in the neck having to wait 7 levels in order to use something I spent 900 gold on (if just talking about the regular flying mount).
In a way I agree. I am currently leveling a druid and recently got my flight form, I’ve already noticed a huge increase in leveling speed because you are able to skip so much. I’m glad that they are forcing us slow down and see the content.
Great find with WoW Heroes, that’s a nice tool.
I guess I never thought of the mounts that way. It does kind of suck that you get your flying mount only to not be able to fly with it.
One thing that may be a possibility is mount enchants. I know there have been some spells found in the game that mentioned something about enchanting mounts, so perhaps at 77 you do a quest for a mount enchant that would allow you to use it in Northrend.
(I had seen the enchants on curse, but I can’t find the article now…)
The image of Arthas isn’t CGI, it’s a digital painting. Though it seems clear the artist used some CG models as reference.
That woe-heroes site is completely bullshit, it only looks at itemlevel.
Just a question, are you Herm from Gimped, or is that just a random picture you grabbed? I ask because I’m also from Runetotem, so I know the name.
Lol! It’s Herm.
/runetotem
I have to say, I’m truly astounded to see my Arthas image popping up on various WoW news sites.
Just to clarify, it’s all 3D (done in 3ds max and modo) Photoshop was only used for texturing and a bit of post-processing.
It’s my entry for the Blizzard Frostmourne art contest, and you can find the full thread on CGtalk here:
