8885: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly [UPDATED]

Kenzi August 30 2008 7:48 am 17 Comments

Build 8885 was released last night and had several huge changes. Lots of changes to to other classes, that I’m not listing here, you can check out MMO-Champion for all the details. Here are the Death Knight changes and additions:

 Blood

  • Hysteria (Tier 7) changed to: Induces a friendly unit into a killing frenzy for 30 sec. The target is Enraged, which increases their physical damage by 20%, but causes them to suffer damage equal to 1% of their maximum health every second.
  • Blood Aura (Tier 7) is now passive.
  • Bloody Vengeance (Tier 6) now affects Frost damage as well as physical and shadow.
  • Dark Conviction (Tier 3) now increases crit chance with weapons, spells, and abilities by 1/2/3/4/5%. (Previously just affected weapons)

Frost

  • Frost Aura (Tier 7) is now passive.
  • Improved Icy Touch (Tier 1) changed to: Your Icy Touch does an additional 10% damage and your Frost Fever reduces melee attack speed by an additional 2/4/6%.
  • Toughness (Tier 1) now reduces the duration of all movement slowing effects by 10/20/30/40/50% in addition to its armor increasing effect.
  • Howling Blast damage slightly reduced. Cooldown reduced to 6 seconds. (All Ranks, Previously was 10 sec cooldown)
  • Icy Touch now only affects melee attack speed and reduces it by 14%. (Previously worked on Ranged, Casting and Melee speed, reducing it by 15%)

Unholy

  • Unholy Command (Tier 2) now affects the cooldown of Dark Command.
  • Scourge Strike (Tier 9) changed to: An unholy strike that deals 100% of weapon damage as Shadow damage plus 333 and 50% additional damage for each of the Death Knight’s diseases on the target.
  • Desecration (Tier 7) now affects Plague Strikes instead of Obliterates.
  • Unholy Aura (Tier 7) is now passive.
  • Reaping (Tier 6) now affects Pestilence and Blood Boil. (Previously affected Death and Decay)
  • Raise Dead changed only work on a humanoid corpse that yields experience or honor.
  • Deathcharger renamed Acherus Deathcharger.
  • Death Coil is no longer modified by attack power. (may not be true)

Not listed above are our two new abilities:

Horn of Winter:

Dark Command:

Also with this build where a slew of new achievement titles. They are mostly centered around “server first” achievements. Before you read, I’ll go ahead and say that the Death Knight server first to 80 title is “of the Ebon Blade”, which I think is a massive crock of shit. I have zero problems at all with rewarding…ahem…titling the people that make it to 80 first, but don’t give away a title that every Death Knight would be proud to wear!

I have a thread, crying if you want to call it, on both our forums as well as the Death Knight Beta forums. I hold on to the small hope that this is a “Place Holder” title, but the logic in me asks “why would you need a PH for text?”. What do you think?

Should "of the Ebon Blade" be available to everyone?

Really titles are rare enough as it is and the ones above are fairly cool. I think that once a player achieves lv 80 or skill 450 they should obtain that title, there are so many titles there that one single player could possibly get that you wouldn’t see the same one all the time on everyone.

  • Slipshade said:

Dunno if i care to much about a title, but yeah, every DK from what i understand is tied to the Ebon blade, so its pretty stupid to only award to the first DK to reach 80, also i cant really see all “prestige” of being the first lonely guy/girl who hits 80 first, i might sound abit like a steorie type right now, but well, im fairly sure you would have to be without work or school to have any chance to hit 80 First

is there a cooldown on horn of winter?

  • Keglen said:

Yea, and the people that are in beta right now have a head basicly becasue they know where most.. if not everything… is in northrend. I know I wont get first to 80 on a DK, i really like to level slowly in new places.. really take in everything and stuff. Lore FTW :)

any deathknight to reach lvl 80 should get of the ebon blade but then they would have to change all racials titles for if u just reach lvl 80. personally i think it would be fair if you reach lvl 80 that u can have the option to put the title on of ‘hero of orgrimmar’ (as long as your an orc) and the same for every race

that horn thing rocks! whats the CD?

  • Qetz said:

The only problem with giving everyone certain titles is as soon as you hit 80 there’s 2 titles, one for getting 80 with your class and another for getting 80 with your race..

Mind you, the “of the Ebon Blade” title seems like it would be rewarded for.. i don’t know.. getting exalted with the Ebon Blade? This title should be available to everyone just like the title “Blood Knight” should be available to all the BE paladins that want to wear it.

It’s disappointing to me in the sense that DK will instantly be taken out of the running for firsts in race and profession simply because they start at 55.

Also, people leveling in beta over and over again have a huge advantage over those that aren’t because they’ll actually know where the hell they are going all the time.

Poorly thought out and designed achievements for the loss.

Agreed, I would like to see more titles, but if they are only going to add “first person to xxx” titles they might as well remove them completely, I don’t remember anyone b**ching about how “easy” it was to earn rank private by just getting 15 HKs (which generaly you get within 1 or 2 BGs), or how easy sergent and master sergent ranks where where as on most servers all you had to do was do 1 BG a week to keep sergent and 5 every 4 weeks to keep master sergent. I think titles are a nice idea, I think yes some should be hard to obtain, but not make it so all titles are “elite”.

Back in the good old ranking days pretty much anyone could achieve the 3 lowest ranks, but you actualy had to work to get one of the top 11 ranks, that was a good system and it was nice. I say bring back the having some simple to achieve titles but make the better ones where you have to work for, but boo to this only .0000001% of people can have titles now, I know they are prestige but seriously no one complained about how easy lower ranks where, why not add lower titles such as take your “first to 450 Alch” as Grand Master Alchemist change it to ElderGrand Master Alchemist and have one that is just “reach 450 alch”

also add a few for “Grand Master gatherer” and “Grandmaster Worker” where who ever has 450 of either 2 professions or 2 gathering skills gets them.

  • Egma said:

Sorry, to summerize take all those “first to xxx” titles you have, add the word “Elder ” infront of them and then make the exact same goals, but rather then just reaching it first making it reaching it period and have it the names now. (Besides maybe obtain 80 since that would be just tossing out titles, but profestion wise it wouldnt, anyone to cap a profesion should get a title not just the one single person that did it .5secs before them because of lag)

On a completely different note, how do the talent changes affect frost tanking ? i see endless winter doesnt aply frost fever through frost strike and mind freeze anymore? is that now implemented in those skills similar to icy touch , or have we been given a thorough screw in the ear?

If any1 who plays beta has any information on this , plz post.

I think Horn of Winter is gonna act like the Warrior’s Shouts.

    same principle atleast

  • Sidary said:

Nah i think the Horn of Winter is gonna act like a Shammy Heroism
for twice as long but around same CD. Just my thought.

  • lordminkie said:

honestly Horn of Winter is a lot like Shammy totem (strength of earth) except that it’s probably a dispellable buff.

Also, I think they just removed the text about AP affecting spells out of all DK spells. It’s a class function and it’s repetition is silly.

The numbers and understanding of it isn’t necessary to the average player, and is best reserved for theorycrafters and min-maxers =D

  • Draakie said:

i think it’s lame that only the first one gets that title, only the people with no-life have a change to get it.

Just do a whoever hits 80 within the first 2-3 weeks of WotLK’s release..or first gross amount to hit 80 kinda thing. etc. etc.
