So, We are a Pet Class
It’s well known that Unholy Death Knights have a wide range of abilities and talents that allow them to have pets “longer” than the other trees. Since beta there has been some confusion on whether Unholy Death Knights are supposed to have a “permanent” pet. This confusion stems mainly from a mount bug that causes Unholy DK’s pets to last until they get killed from damage (I’ll show to bug below). Today Ghostcrawler cleared up the confusion and, yes, we are a pet class.
GhostcrawlerThis has been confusing, so we’re trying to clean up the design a little bit.
Raise Dead — 2 minute duration. 5 minute cooldown. Summons a guardian (no pet bar).
Ravenous Dead — extends duration (passively)
Night of the Dead — lowers cooldown (actively)
Master of Ghouls — the summoned ghoul is a pet instead of a guardian. This means he gets a cute name, a pet bar, and there is no duration to the ability. If your ghoul is killed, you will have to wait for the cooldown before bringing him back.
But your rotting little friend will stick around forever if you can keep him alive.
Here is a little video I made documenting the current (as of 8926) bugs with Master of Ghouls. (Yes I misspelled permanent…twice…I’m not fixing it…)
So, rejoice! We are a pet class…officially!

This confirms it beyond a doubt. I am going Unholy Death Knight. =)
Yay, here I come Mr. Ruffles!
Is it wrong to want to name your ghoul after a guild leader that royally screwed me over on my paladin?
That depends how you are going to use the ghoul. If you plan to have it tank, then feel free to name it after the guild leader.
Ok I lurk but let me just say. SWEET!!!!!!!!!
That just sealed the fact that I am going Unholy.
So basicly with this it takes away 1/2 of what “Ravenous Dead (Rank 3)” does since the 2 parts of that talent is
1)”Increases the total Strength of you and your Ghouls by 3%”
2)”and increases the duration of Raise Dead by 90 sec.”
part one would still be usefull but part 2 would no longer be in effect is infinity + 90 seconds still = infinity (unless it made it live 90 seconds after death which I don’t think they did lol)
Point is doesn’t Master of Ghouls pretty much make Ravenous Dead obsolete as 3 talent points, sure if you didn’t want it as a pet and didn’t do master of ghouls it would be usefull for 3 points but is 3 points really worth 3% str to pet? I mean what is that anyways if the pet has 500 str it would gain 15 str from 3 talent points.
Don’t get me wrong I love this fact a lot since I decided I am going unholy instead of blood since 1/2 of bloods heals went away first couple patches, I am just saying does it make sence to have a talent that increases ghouls length by 90 seconds and then one to make it last forever? Then again it might just be there for those blood specs that have 8 points to spend and want a pet that lasts a bit longer for the fun of it even though it isn’t part of its main spells. I guess its kinda the same idea as Omen of Clarity was for feral druids… you had to spend 11 points in resto but the 11 points where all ready feral points in a restro tree.
It’s about time. Imagine if the Scourge only lasted 90 seconds for Arthas. On a three minute cooldown.
Kenzi, you might want to update this post with the follow-up blue post regarding changes to the Ravenous Dead talent. It will now add a bonus to the stat conversion from you to your ghoul instead of increasing the duration, so the talent will no longer be redundant to players with Master of Ghouls.
since i first saw unholy i thought:”blood or unholy” now….
UNHOLY!
this is what I’ve been waiting for, unholy here I come.
I now see the true colors of this new class.
Blood: The disgruntled Ret Paladin tired of waiting for class improvements.
Frost: The Fury Warrior who thinks he can tank simply by virtue of being a warrior.
Unholy: … THE MELEE HUNTER!
Quote from Shaman Power:
“It’s about time. Imagine if the Scourge only lasted 90 seconds for Arthas. On a three minute cooldown.”
Death Knight player =/= Lich King
or were you referring to when he was an ordinary (albeit the first and most powerful) death knight? With that ability called “raise dead?” It raised six dead units nearby to fight for him for forty seconds. Had a long cooldown, too. Now that’s just the WCIII game mechanics, if you’re referring to the Scourge as a whole, then you’re silly. The plague was a supernatural disease that permanently raised its victims as undead; Arthas didn’t like, shoot bolts of it or something. It was spread in the wake of his armies to secure whatever city or area he’d just annihilated, and to root out any survivors. It also made reclaiming anything he conquered damn near impossible.
Wow, got a little off-track there. I’m happy to see Unholy Knights will be like a pseudo-pet class, it adds a distinct feel to how they do what they do. The trees are getting more and more defined every patch.
Blood – Survivability
Frost – Control
Unholy – Utility
And all three can tank or DPS with the correct specs. I love how Blizzard has set that up. Frost certainly has more tank talents than the other two, but they make up for it with other tricks.
Soooo are they going to let the orc racial “Command” work with the DK summons then?
wait so the ghoul will be alive forever until it dies :D, oh this will be fun for arenas
Good news for Orc Deathknights for sure.
“Is it wrong to want to name your ghoul after a guild leader that royally screwed me over on my paladin?”~~Requiem
No, it’s not wrong, it’s privilege! To name my ghoul after the raid leader who screwed over my ‘lock? Now that is sweet, sweet justice and worth whatever talent points it takes. To bad it’s on a cool-down–or I would see die repeatedly.
The Ghouls come with predetermined names just like Warlock Pets. So unfortunately your unusual sense of retribution will have to wait.
Awww…that sucks…. -_-” Ah well; there are always macros; they’ll get it one way or another.
So with the naming being the same as warlock pets, that new Inscription item will only have any real use for hunters? (The item that allows you to rename your pet)
hmm I have not seen this item you speak of, but maybe not, it is possible that DK and lock pet names are only unnameable because they are named upon getting them with a random name generator, just because you don’t choose the name doesn’t mean that it doesn’t get one, just hunter pets are just generic since all hunters name their pets, most locks would forget and theired be 15 million locks running around with a Pet named Voidwalker. It might be quit posible to actualy name your Demons and Ghouls with it…
common item work, I want a Voidwalker named “Fluffy”, ok maybe not, but would be cool if you could using the item you speak of.
[...] 2 ft away from where we started. Yes DK were actually being called a Pet class because currently they can keep their ghoul out 24/7. We’ve had water elemental since patch 2.0 and at best in patch 3.0 with specs you can [...]
This is what they really need to do with the Shaman Spirit Wolves, very weak in their current incarnation. Also, they were permanent in W3. I am starting to lean towards giving DK a serious shot now.
@shaman power
both the death knights animate dead spell and the necromancer’s raise dead spell in war 3 had a duration… try again…
Cool!!! I am for UNHOLY or Frost…blood, naaaa
COOL!!!! WOOT UNHOLY!!!!
