You Want an Original Death Charger, Right?

Kenzi September 27 2008 7:00 pm 40 Comments

All of our mounts, despite the critics, are really nice. The new Death Charger has it’s own uniqueness, the flying armored Death Chicken is making ground, but what hardcore Death Knight wouldn’t kill to have the original Death Charger? Yes, I know that Horde will have this option easier, but it still won’t be the same unless you get it by knocking Baron Rivendare on his ass and taking it from a real DK!

I got bored the other night and took my premade level 80 Death Knight into Strat just to see how farming for my Death Charger once live hits would go as a level 80. I had never tried to solo the 45 min run at all with any of my live server level 70’s (never really cared to) so this was my first attempt. I was surprised at how easy it was and got to thinking about how cool it would be to make an achievement on the amount of time it takes you to finish the 45 min Baron run. I posted my suggestion in the Achievements forum, maybe we can have some fun while we farm for our mount!

Below are video from my first two runs. I plan on doing a couple more just to see how much time I can shave off, right now I am somewhere around 12 min. By no means are these videos a guide or even a how-to, frankly I made several mistakes while doing them. The first video is only the last 2 pulls, the second is the full run.

Will you be farming a Baron Mount at 80?

Hate to Grammar Nazi, but that’s supposed to be “You Want an Original Death Charger”, as an indefinite article before a word that starts with a vowel is “an”, not “a”.

  • Kenzi (author) said:

Yeah, I am far from a grammar expert, and that is actually my pet peeve, Blue Moon made me do that!

While I’m all for farming this mount, the drop rate is still terrifyingly abismal. I’m surprised they’ve never gone through and changed it.

Well an Epic level 60 Undead Mount still is kinda nothing campored to the Baron one. =3
More importantly, did Blizzard already put the part into the game where they explain you WHY Rivendare is waltzing around alive(?) and well in Naxx without being headless?

He’s also in the Death Knight starting area as a quest giver. I didn’t pay enough attention to see if he explained how he got there.

I’ve been farming Baron for ages. I can’t wait to do it as an 80 hunter. i won’t be doing it on my DK though, I love the DK mounts too much.

  • pzarr said:

I can’t see it being worth the time investment. Baron’s mount has a terrible droprate to begin with.

Frankly i think they should have stuck to the original mount looks. they’ve had it for 2 games now.

Only took me 8 runs to get exalted AD+the mount :<

While the video is interesting (only watched the second one), I must say your playstyle is horrible.
-It’s apparent from the video that you click. That’s something you should start working on well… yesterday.
-I don’t really get what you’re doing with your runes. Take the abominations just before Baron as an example. You ran round Icy Touching 2-3, then used pestilence before plague striking another abomination. That cost you 2-3 frost runes, a unholy rune and a blood rune and got you 2-3 damaged abominations from the icy touch, all of them had frost fever and a single one had blood plague.

What you could’ve done was gather them all together, icy touch a single one, plague strike that same one, then pestilence, getting your diseases up on all of them. Then you have 1u1f1b left, DnD and then start spamming Scourge Strike/Death Strike using blood boil rather than blood strike as blood strike doesn’t give you death runes which are quite frankly a lot more useful than the minimal damage blood strike does (not to mention blood boil does more when you have several targets with 4 diseases around you).

On the other hand, video was fun and interesting. Too bad european beta doesn’t provide premades, still have a little strech ahead before hitting 80. :-(

    Wow, Arnor, talk about elitist.

So clicking makes my playstyle horrible? Seems like a stupid statement, it’s really a matter of choice and what I am used to.

As for the rune cycle. You cant run a rotation on these mobs at 80, they die before you can even finish it. I gather with IT just to build runic power for unholy blight, if you plague strike it just makes it too hard to gather them all because of the desecrations. I tend to try and save my blood runes for healing myself. basically all you need to kill a whole pack of mobs is unholy blight and death & decay.

Thanks for the advice, it just wasnt needed.

You can shave off a lot of time by killing Nerub’enkan first, followed by Baroness Anastari and lastly Maleki the Pallid.

Also, if you kill the last abomination near the door to Mr. Rivendare’s home you can enter and fight Ramstein inside it, bypassing the AOE mobs completely.

I’m going for AD rep exalted. If I get a mount in the process, bonus.

This video also showed the mapping issues with desecration
It’s obvious when he’s fighting inside the ziggies, you can see the desecration map running up the pillars and walls.

This is not an attack on you Kenzi, just general AoE farming info for those not in the beta. You did us all a favor by getting video of this and I’m sure inspired alot of future Baron farmers.

Arnor has valid points. If you’re careful you can get exactly the rotation he is talking about. I’ve got about 10 runs on baron so far myself. It takes a little practice to keep your dps low enough at first (I just turn away from my target but turning off auto attack would work too). It’s worth the effort though. I can end all of the abominations in two pulls for a total of about 60 seconds invested. And the Hockey team after them (who take forever to spawn) in another 20.

The important thing is how you gather. If you use Death Grip to pull a group one gets to you first and screws up you rotation. For AoE you need everyone together at the same time. I like to pull strat by using Death Coil on the furthest target and then switching to an elite in the front to start my rotation. If there are casters you run at the group. If I get it right everyone is in range when I am ready to hit Pestilence, then DnD and everything is dead in a hurry.

I’m sure everyone’s style will be a bit different. But this has worked for me so far up to Auchenai Crypts. I’ve been trying to see how far I can get in 5man content solo when the Northrend servers get instable.

    Awesome video.

I was wondernig if you could link it to another “full screen” version? I’m trying to look at your healthbar in the video but that WeGame.com logo is covering it.

I will definitely continue to farm the mount, i do it every day atm, have hundreds of runs and no mount but i keep my hopes up.

Btw… im not in beta but i believe a 12min run is actually pretty bad… i do it in 18 min at 70 and my gear isnt even near the best… i know at least one guy that does it in 10 min at lvl 70.

  • Hell_Nico said:

Lol actualy with my 70 shaman enchanced I kill the baron in 20 minute :)

  • Troqu said:

So as someone who only casually follows DKs (I’m not in the beta and I’m sure I’ll level one my other 70s first) what healed you around 3:26?

  • jfijolek said:

In response to the baron mount farming, other than a nice way to make some gold at a decent speed. I don’t see the point in this for horde characters. The baron mount is identical to an undead horse, except it has like a blue cloth instead of red, green, or purple; am i correct in saying this? If i still played alliance I would definitely be up for farming one on a non death knight toon. Considering I think the DK’s pallys and locks already have sweet mounts I’de only bother doing this on an alliance toon that wasn’t one of those classes.

    to zule,
So have you been able to solo a lot of 5 mans in BC as a lvl 80 DK? Im honestly more interested in doing this kind of stuff and pvp than raiding. Maybe going back and doing MC with some friends who never got to experience it. I think it would make a decent 5 man at 80…I know its been manned but, for some non raiders i think 5 at 80 would be a good group.

  • Cross64 said:

Clicking is a horrible playstyle in comparison keybinding. You have many times better control of your character if you keybind. PVE you can get away with clicking, but in pvp it’s absolutely mandatory to bind if you expect to do well.

  • Anarchron said:

I go to farm it, every day :)

Wait isn’t Baron going to be in Naxx and not Strath?

  • awesomeguy said:

    this makes me hard.

  • Blava said:

Is there ANYTHING you don’t click? I mean, clicking some spells you don’t use too often is somewhat acceptable (even though binding them is still better), but you literally click everything, even the 1-5 spells. Also, you keyboard turn non stop (because you click everything).

Clicking is indeed a horrible playstyle. I can understand you’re used to it but you would be so much better off learning how to keybind. Not only will you be faster activating abilities, you’ll also be able to move much smoother due to using your mouse to turn rather than your arrow keys or whatever the hell you’re using.

Not only would keybinding and mouse turning improve your playstyle, it would also make your movies a lot less of a pain to watch and would give you a bit more credibility. I mean, saying advice isn’t needed when you play like crap, doesn’t really help your image.

    No, I got RL.

  • jonny said:

the guy has simply made a video to demonstrate to all you other death knight hopefulls how a DK would go about clearing strat and showing some more cool spells and abilties simply as an example in use

cut him some slack, so what if he uses a mouse, you all did at 1 point im betting, if he prefers it that way i see no problem, who are we to flame sum1 else’s playstyle sersley…

  • Thalassian said:

Argh, my eyes bleed from all the clicking. Do whatever suits you best, but once you go keybind you never look back. With good reason.

    Love clickers in PvP though.

  • CLICKMASTA said:

Kenzi, I got your back bro, I despise clicking, and feeling quite happy using minimal key bindings. I don’t see what made Arnor and others be such d-bags about it. PvP, key bindings help, but I can still pwnurface with on my enhance shammy nonetheless. I am a fast clicker, lol.

  • Graurune said:

Crap….Need to farm it after hitting 80…;)

    Kenzi,

Nice video’s dude, don’t let these ppl pick at your play style, everyone uses what is best for them.

I will certainly be farming this when my DK hits 80. Was wondering what build did you use to do these runs?

  • Kagekatsu said:

seems he’s using an unholy spec, what with the bone shield and all.

as for your playstyle…i honestly see nothing wrong with it other than the rotation aspect but as you said that could just be because the mobs are so low lvl. i use minimal key bindings myself having too many times seen and experienced people accidentally using the wrong one…i find clicking forces me to take that extra .5 sec to look at what i’m doing.

  • DraOrclock said:

One question about the death knight itself to you feel really powerful because i have 4 70s and i find that in strath u can power through a them fairly easy on melee but minus the death knights spell the melee looked pretty weak it may be because im not understanding the runic power system any explaination you can offer would be helpful ty

blava, jesus christ man. credibility and -image-?

okay, if you’re gonna believe that sack of shit, as an owner of a deathcharger myself i’d like to tell you to chill the shit out man

  • Soam said:

Wow, the Death Knight fights slow. My level 70 Retribution Paladin did Stratholme far faster.

    Sort of disappointed.

  • Tiff said:

Hi, I dinged 80 on my DK about 4 days ago and have been casually farming this mount. If I want to I can get to Baron in about 10 minutes.

Still no mount drop :( but the rate has been dropped down to 1 of 100 chance as posted by a blue on wow forums.

Good luck to everyone farming this!

Provided you have the bag space there is a good ammt of gold to be made if you loot everything you kill.
