Season 4 To End and 3.0 to Release October 14th

Nethaera posted today about the end of season 4, this comes a day after Slorkuz posted that season 4 will officially end on the day that 3.0.2 will be released to live servers. It doesn’t take a gnomish engineer to figure out that 3.0.2 will be deployed to live servers on 10/14 based on the below post:

While I have you here, thought I would share some more video I’ve taken the past couple days.

Build 9014 put Glyph vendors at the Inscription trainer so that beta testers could get the high end Glyphs for testing. Here is a video of the chaos in that area and a look at Glyphs being used:

Also, I took a flight from Dalaran to Howling Fjord. What surprised me was the cost of the flight. Granted I know we’ll be making tons of cash in WotLK, but it just felt weird seeing 2g for a flight. Here is a video of the flight from Dalaran to Howling Fjord:

I love the bagpipe music, it really gives Howling Fjord the epic feeling it deserves; it really is a beautiful zone. Just outside of Utgarde Keep is a ginormous bridge that just screams jump off me, and of course I did.

Also, another tidbit, In mostly PvP blues (still in the premade gear) fully red damaged gear wont completely kill you cost wise. I’m sure all epics could be in the hundreds, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought.

I didn’t hear any bagpipes, I think you were thinking of the fiddle music. Reminds me of Zelda: The Wind Waker. :P

  • Radenska said:

The bagpipes are definitely the first melody you hear in the Howling Fjord video…I’m not sure what you’re talking about.

  • moya said:

    fiddles, not bagpipes.

  • moya said:

unless you’re referring to the last video. but those aren’t bagpipes either…

  • Conn said:

The third video DOES start with bagpipes. It might not be the traditional Highland Bagpipes that everyone is used to, but it sounds like uilleann pipes (irish bagpipe) or parlor pipes. I should know, I play all 3.

  • Accident said:

Don’t know what you guys are smoking, but bagpipes are what you mainly hear in Howling Fjord. lol

  • Kiera said:

No, that is certainly fiddle music in an Irish style in the opening to Howling Fjord, not bagpipes.

uilleann pipes sound like this (follow link and click on a sound clip): http://www.uilleann.com/indexb.html

Those are clearly strings in the video. . . none of the sqwaking or squeaking sounds pipes produce.

Check out the video to hear Irish fiddle music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNhkRQB6rwg&eurl=http://www.fiddlesessions.com/oct07/mccarrick.html

    Fiddle music in Howling Fjord.

Sorry, I meant to say that the fiddle music is found in the Flight Video. . . the sports video does indeed have pipes.

I am uploading a video now with all 7 HF day tracks set to HF sreenshots, either way it is very nice music and definitely makes the zone.

I think that the cost was so high because you may not have alot of rep with the different factions.

  • Kenzi (author) said:

Yeah, i ment to mention in the post that it was with neutral rep, I didnt think that 41g was high though

  • Petre said:

The instrument is called a Chanter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chanter). It is like a bagpipe without the drones. The sound is very particular, and you can hear the player trilling his fingers.

  • Remnint said:

It is most definately the Uilleann pipes, i play them and i am 100% Irish lol i would know that sound anywhere, a fiddle is more whiny even in the hands of a skilled player

  • Petre said:

Uilleann pipes include drones and a chanter, so you may well be correct. The music in HF does not use drones however. While you could argue on which type of Chanter it might be, it is definitely a Chanter.

  • Petre said:

Actually, I’m wrong. There are DEFINITELY drones in that song, in fact. It STARTS with drones.

Actually, so far no one has got the instrument right, but very close. the main instrument at play in the majority of the Howling Fjord music is an old Celtic pipe called an Uillean Bagpipe. Instead of blowing air inside the bag with the mouth, you use a bellow. It has a much more melancholy sound, you can hear an Irish fiddle as well at times. If you like this (sounds dorky, but hey, you can listen when no one’s looking) try Riverdance.

  • Finnegan said:

    fairly certain their uilleann pipes

I’d stick to a synthiser, too many loops on a constant level, so yes.

    But im not too sure.

I have a question on that last video, I see you jumped in the water without Path of Frost on and it was like any normal water, have you tried jumping from that height into water with Path of Frost on? Would it treat the water like ground where you would die a violent death or would you just land on the water and stop? That is one mechanic I have not been able to test before since there is no really place to jump into water from death heights in original or BC… I don’t have a shaman with a flying mount yet to try the dismount then cast water walking yet to try that way.

Actually, the Howling Fjord music is done with bagpipes, but more specifically the Uilleann pipes (sometimes called Union pipes). They have a more melodious sound (and higher tonal range) than the Scottish pipes, so it’s not surprising by some of the comments here to see that some of you think it’s an instrument other than the pipes.

I actually have a friend that plays them, the sound is quite unmistakable. :)

  • zeulu said:

i would think that this is digitally refined music of the Uilleann pipes

I believe taht the patch may come out this upcoming tuesday, the 7th. reason? the newest patch containing 1.11 gigs of data and no problems on the PTR anymore. they’re in smooth sailing…

  • Finnegan said:

Im going to re-cander my vote of Uilleann pipes, I think its actually a wheel fiddle (or Hurdy Gurdy). Best replicate sound I could find in short notice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLws9bV5aVY&feature=related . Cheers!

  • Sipefree said:

I vote Uillean Pipes. There is most definitely a drone in there.
