Nothing makes leveling easier than a nice weapon! Once you’re in Northrend you get the opportunity early on for a weapon that will last a good 5-7 levels. The Axe of Frozen Death can easily be obtained at level 68, is a nice source of EXP while obtaining and gives a few other nice quest rewards in the process.

The quest lines for both Alliance and Horde are in Borean Tundra. Head over soon as you hit 68 and start your Northrend career in style!

Key Stats:

  • 341-513 min/max damage
  • 118.6 DPS and 3.60 speed
  • 37 Strength 54 Stamina

Below is a table showing each factions quest chain as well as some of the notable rewards you get along the way:

Don’t you think that Ingvar’s Monolithic Cleaver would be a better option? It’s easily obtained since Utgarde Keep is an easy dungeon.

    332-498 Damage
    129.7 DPS
    +56 STR
    3.2 Speed
    +70 Hit Rating

This article wasn’t inteded to be the best gear, just highlighting different options.

No because you can not use that axe until level 70. Axe of Frozen Death can be acquired at level 68. It is also not based on a luck factor or RNG(Random Number Generated).

Just got this axe last night as I was about to ding 73. Awesome weapon, wish I had known about it sooner.

Very informative… Thanks K. Love to see more stuff like this(little tips and stuff to look for).

I have both of those axes and I like Axe of Frozen Death better.

Wowhead’s link for the quest chain (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=11716) states that it requires level 70 – is that right?

Axe? Why axe? For some reason, i don’t see any good two hand swords anywhere… i’m not going to use some frigging axes :/
I’m not yet on Northrend with my DK (EU-Vashj, Horde) but i can’t find swords on Outland, all DKs i see have axes….

  • chronium said:

thats because b;izzard hasn’t put in any good 2h swords in the game till 80 or unless your lucky and find a randomized stat sword

Actually there is alot more to getting this then the quests listed above. So far I have completed the above as well as 3/4 of all the quests in BT and I still have yet to get the quest for this axe.

  • Influenzo said:

Actually, no, there isn’t anything else required.

    I’m a Gnome DK.
    Dinged 68 in Netherstorm.
Took the boat from SW to Borean Tundra.
Went straight to Tharissan and started the quest chain.
The last quest for Alliance is a bit tough and will require a group at 68, but the first 3 quests are easily soloable.

  • Kenzi said:

Yup, horde may have difficulties, but I just did it as ally. Last quest had a 68 and 69 DK and 69 hunter.

Duh,it would be better if you have told about that in the news,i spend my time going to Northrend and doing that quest chain for a bit of xp and no axe…dammit,i am returning to Outland…

The questline for horde is very, very easy. The person you need to kill (71 elite) is transformed via a quest item into a non-elite (similar to the giant zapping back in feralas) and dies in < 5 seconds :)

The quest chain looks long, but 4 or so of them are just ’speak to this person 5 feet away from me’ etc

  • Eitrig said:

Yep,it’s easy, but you have to complete another quest-chain in order to get the axe.

  • Dehdrexx said:

I did the quest chain mentioned for horde, and unforunetly it does not alone prompt the quest, there are other prerequisites that I have yet to discover..

  • Apoxon said:

Horde side you get this axe from the quest Hellscream’s Champion (obviously).

However, to unlock Hellscream’s Champion you must
    a) Clear the Nerubians out of Mightstone Quarry (questline)
    b) Scout the Plains of Nassam (questline/flying carpet to Mist viking guys)
    c) Do the Torp’s Farm quests up to and including the escort of Shadowstalker Getry (Veridus the Flenser, etc)
    d) Do the bloodspore plains questline listed in the article.

Only once all four tasks are complete will you be worthy of being called Hellscream’s Champion.

I did all the requirements except the last quest in this line. In fact, I am 5 quests away from the Borean Tundra achievement. The last quest in this line does never came up for me. Buggy, much?

  • vampus said:

did not come up for me*

  • Melicia said:

Found a bit of a bug in the horde side quest chains when I did it. Do not make the mistake of thinking just because you get a quest that tells you to report to Taunk’la village that you will get the axe. If you complete the quests relating to the pollen spores at a lvl higher than 70 (I did it at 71) it may not give you the final quest to kill Gammothra. I had to turn on low level quest search in order for the NPC to give me the quest. However after doing this I had no other problems and of course at 71 soloed the last quest very easily.
