Ghostcrawler Hints at Coming Changes

A lot of issues that have been mentioned here and the official forums got touched on today. While no definite changes where announced, GC did hit on what was currently being looked at. Synopsis? Things look good!

Ghostcrawler
We’ve had a lot of questions about death knights recently. This is a new class, and while we’re thrilled overall with how it’s been received, we always expected to have to make more changes to death knights than the classes that have had their talents under the microscope for many years.

We’re not prepared to announce specific changes to DKs yet, but here are some general areas we are tinkering with. Most of these changes apply predominantly to tanking death knights, so I avoided cross-posting this thread, but there are probably items of interest to dps specs as well.

1) Death knights seem to tank well when they have cooldowns available and take too much damage otherwise. The change here seems obvious – boost Frost presence’s mitigation while reducing the mitigation of some other abilities, especially Icebound Fortitude and Bone Shield.

2) One idea we have for Icebound Fortitude is to scale the mitigation based on defense skill. This lets the ability be less of a paladin bubble in PvP for dpsknights, while still letting it act more like Shield Wall for tanks. It also has the side effect of making defense slightly more attractive to death knights. (Let me add before it’s asked that yes we understand Ferals have this problem too and we are working on it.)

3) Unholy is a very popular tanking spec, largely on the strength of Bone Shield. Expect to see some buffs to tanking talents in the Blood tree especially.

4) Rune Strike was intended to be a reactive tanking tool, not a rogue killer. We will probably chill its weapon damage and increase its threat.

5) We don’t like the behavior where DKs feel like they are supposed to drop Death and Decay to generate runic power before a pull. It just looks goofy. We will probably lower the runic power costs of Unholy Blight and Horn of Winter, which seem to be the primary reasons to generate RP. Horn of Winter will probably be something like no cost, 30 sec cooldown, generates 10 rp.

EDIT: I am refering to using DnD outside of combat just for the runic power (kind of like Bloodrage for warriors). It’s totally legit and intended to use it to start a fight to gain threat and hurt the bad guys.

6) There are some odd situations caused by Shadow of Death that we would like to fix. The talent isn’t designed to let you escape durability damage or rez by zoning into an instance.

7) There are some annoying parts of the non-pet ghoul. We want to lower the aggro range (for less accidental pulls) and spawn the ghoul in quicker when dismounting. The ghoul, at least Unholy’s version, could also use some AE avoidance like other pets.

8) We are probably going to add a new spell to let you raise fallen allies so that you don’t have to make the decision between bringing back another player (which was just supposed to be a fun bonus) and bringing back your ghoul, which can be pretty crticial for some specs.

This isn’t everything we’re talking about of course, just a little preview.

Great, rune strike is a lifesaver for a class that has little burst dps (in a pvp setting), so nerfing it makes this class less and less attractive to pvp with, which was why I made a DK in the first place. And nerfing Icebound Fortitude sucks for pvp as well. I don’t see how taking 50% less damage is anything close to being a “pally bubble”. My druid has barkskin, which reduces the damage he takes by 20 or 30% (can’t remember how much at the moment), which is not too far off from what the DK’s get. I guess I should just give up and roll a paladin; they seem to get their cake and eat it too.

A no-cost Horn of Winter would be nice though, because it is lame to drop a DnD whenever I need to cast it, and the “free cast” buff you get just after rezzing in pvp for some reason negates the rune power you generate from dropping a DnD.

Blizz tends to be fair and I never really complain about class adjustments or even nerfs; I just roll with the blows, so I have my hopes that they keep us pvp types in mind.

if that change comes to horn of winter i wonder how they are going to change the glyph. I find the nerf to bone shield a bit interesting. Its been a ncie talent but I haven’t had the mitigation to keep it up even with the glyph. Im only 76 still but I can relate to being strong when ive got cool-downs but then otherwise taking big damage.

wohoo the first pvp nerfs that also affect pve are coming.. god bless rogues obv nobody can’t touch them.

gotta agree with you here. They want to make us less powerful against one of the most over-represented classes in game. Thanks guys.

A no cost Horn of Winter will be great.
I’m more excited about that new spell for raising friends. I still haven’t used my Raise Dead to accomplish this, because when I’m in an instance normally if one of the other guys is dead, we are either wiped or my ghoul is still alive. So I have yet to experience having a player-used ghoul running around with me.

Thank you! Finally, someone is actually thinking about us DK tanks. I will be interested to see how you scale IBF to defense skill, and how well it works. As well, a no cost Horn of Winter excites me. A raise dead spell might be nice, don’t know how other classes would feel about it, but I do enjoy the idea. And even though I am not Unholy spec, geat idea on giving their ghoul AE avoidance like other pets in the game.

yea i like some of the changes… could use some more. Problems i have with my dk our my ghoul. im unholy spec so he is a pet which is nice and all but as soon as u click to attack anything it just leaps into action. its nice not having to hit attack attack all the time but its also a pain.

this 1 quest required me to target falcons and things. everytime id clicked the quest cage my ghoul would jump and kill it lol… i had to dismiss him. it wouldnt be so bad if corpse dust wasnt 50s a pop. kinda silly though if u cant quest with your ghoul w.o him going after things. i tried getting him to stay and what not but nothing. ive tried tanking with my dk and it went badly. im not sure if it was me, the group or healer or what.

it seemed like he wasnt to sure when to actually heal. alot of the healers ive been with wait until your halfway down before they pop a heal and it works for other tanks but dks take random numbers of damage. also the dark command spell some of the mobs seem to be immune to it in the instance so its a pain to pull aggro off healer when all your runes our used. i like the idea of giving dks a ress spell. ive tried raiseing my dead allies with raise dead and it doesnt help at all. even coming back as a ghoul non pvp wise seems pointless.

pvp wise you have another chance to finish your enemy, but pve wise if your on a boss and everyones dead and you come back as a ghoul your pretty screwed. even if its just mobs you can only kill them then die yourself. maybe get rid of the explode ability and give somekind of channelleing self ress. maybe if you come back as a ghoul and have corpse dust or some new regeant and chann the new spell you come back to life. maybe have that for thought. kinda like a shamans self ress with anks maybe. bone shield and unholy blight.

i used to have but found them to be pretty pointless while lvling. bone shield is nice but 4 hits and poof… which it isnt that hard taking 4 hits and it has a 1 min cd. maybe bring it to 5 charges + the glyph to give it 6 and maybe increase the time its on. its a pain to have to watch up top every 2-5 mins to put horn and bone shield back up..not saying im lazy but i just found it to be a waste of time i could just be questing instead of taking a sec every time it went down to bring another bone shield up.

unholy blight is nice but i found myself to be useing it less and less. maybe change it to be alittle like thorns or something. when i fight mobs i useally use icy touch, plague strike.. and if its more then 1 mob, ill use pestilence and blood boil..alone with death and decay and there usally dead..unholy blight might be better for pvp…i just find it a waste…corpse explosion to..i liked the spell in beta and all but while questing i found myself never even using it.

id always use death strike to heal myself and would never have a rune for corpse explosion even if id have 1 handy id hit a mob for 100s each nothing to special. didnt it have runic power instead of using runes in beta.. i cant remember but maybe put it back to that. make it like 30 runic power. i have no problems killing mobs and generating runic power its just once i use my runes all i have our a selected amount of skills that right not arnt to good.

so i say make corpse explosion use runic power instead, change unholy blight lower runic coast could work but maybe make it last alittle longer, like thorns, add another charge to bone shield and maybe increase the time it lasts and cd, and give some kind of ress chance for when your a ghoul a chann skill or something. what do you guys think?
