World of Warcraft is an NBA Sponsor
So I’m watching the Lakers play the Rockets tonight and as I’m walking back into the room from a beer run I notice that one of the score recaps is brought to me by “World of Warcraft“. I kind of snickered at first cause it fits Blizzard well trying to fit into the mainstream, but then I got to thinking this was the first I have heard of an NBA sponsorship.
Of course I have to hop on the interwebs and do a Google search to see what the rest of the world is saying about this. I get surprised by the first article I read where the writer basically thinks “this sponsorship has very limited potential”. He even gives a detailed graphic of just how the two won’t work.
That graphic notes two NBA players that play the game, and of course we all know they are not the only celebrities or sports stars that do play. The list or stars is too long to detail, but the stereotypical WoW player is not what most would think it is. Mila Kunis anyone? So why is that? Is gaming or in particular MMO’s going that mainstream now? Is it that hard for people to think of gaming in any other way than the South Park episode? Not all gamers are the over weight, living in the basement of the moms house, pocket protector having nerds that most view us as…are we? I think WoW sponsoring an NBA game was a perfect idea and I am proof positive that it was sound advertising. So what do you think. Can the mainstream let gamers and MMOers join in?

World of Warcraft also sponsered last weeks NASCAR race. There was a Ventrilo car in the race as well.
didnt know about the Ventrilo car, thats awesome. I am a Lakers and Pistons fan and I enjoy World of Warcraft I think there is some potential just not sure how much. It very well could bring more players into WoW.

Meh, if the mainstream doesn’t realize that more and more non-archetypical gamers enjoy playing games, it’ll just be overruled eventually. I mean, even Vin Diesel plays WoW.
