Tom Chilton is making his rounds on the interview circuit selling 3.2, this time he answers questions for VideoGamer.com. I’m only going to copy/paste the DK information, be sure to follow the link to see the full interview where Chilton discusses:

  • New Content
  • Level 80 battleground Isle of Conquest
  • The Arena system
  • Turning off EXP

Of course he also gets asked directly about the “nerfs” incoming for the Death Knight class in which he responds:

VideoGamer.com: Why are you “nerfing” the Death Knight class?

TC: More than anything else we’re just trying to make sure that we balance Death Knights relatively to everybody else. Of course we want Death Knights to feel like an awesome powerful class, just like any other class. People mention the fact that they’re a hero class, but to us what that means is well, they have their own special starting experience – they start at level 55, which is very heroic compared to other characters – but that doesn’t mean that at the end game they’re supposed to be more powerful. We’ve found that there were areas of the game that we felt like they were just too strong, so we’re trying to balance them just like we would any other character class.

yes it does- poor excuse for normalising the death knight.

From this rebview obvioulsy hero class means nothing.

The way I see it, the term “hero class” in WoW is meant to have a similar meaning to the Prestige Classes from Neverwinter Nights. Prestige classes are not necessarily more powerful than the basic classes (like DKs) if the basic classes are played right, but they do have certain requirements to be unlocked such as alreay being a certain level (like DKs), have unique abilities (like DKs) and add more flair to the character (debatable if this is true of DKs now they’re overplayed :P )

Heroes are those who overcome some obstacle in their lives through exceptional courage, but not necessarily by pounding through said obstacle with their fists or overpowered magic. The “hero” part of the term “hero class” is quite nicely described in the DK starter quests. Your character was already a hero of the alliance/horde who fell in battle against the scourge to be risen again as the enemy. Then you had the rather heroic strength of will to break free from the Lich King’s control when he was beaten back by Fordring and Mograine (although not playable, it would have been feasible in Lore that your character didn’t want to abandon the Lich King). Heroism isn’t always about physical strength and prowess, it can be about mental battles too. Movies generally show real heroes as being those who aren’t easily swayed by the lure of a quick path to power… just like Luke Skywalker, the “hero” from Star Wars, and Darth Vader, who also becomes a hero in the end because he breaks free of the Emperor’s will. Even those who do end up becoming heroes because of their brawn or physical skills have deeper reasons for their fights (vengeance for the loss of loved ones, righteous rebellion, overthrowing tyranny etc) than just wanting to show how tough they are. The people who do just show off their power end up being the “enemy” in movies, such as Anakin Skywalker or Drago from Rocky IV among many others.

Sorry for the wall of text, but it seemed to me that kryptønite’s idea of the meaning of “hero” was quite a shallow one. Besides all, DKs can’t be any more powerful than the other classes purely for balancing purposes anyway. If they were definitely the best tanking and dps class in the game regardless of player skill purely because they’re a “hero” class, then that would put all other classes that can’t fulfill a healing role out of business.

To me Death Knights are one of the more interesting pars of wow. They’ve always been a part of the Warcraft lore and it was surprising they weren’t part of vanilla wow. in fact it was really the introduction of such a unique and involved (mechanically) class that brought me back to wow.

DK’s were introduced as a DPS AND a tanking class. while they shouldn’t be more “powerful” than the other classes, if blizzard nerfs DK’s to the point of ineffectiveness in EITHER roll they were designed for I think my time with wow is over. I’m sure many others feel the same way. we don’t pvp much and are not as vocal as the pvp crowd I guess so we lose out in the pve experience which I feel is where one can witness th Warcraft story the most.

Totaly agree with Rifor, have been saying it as well just not as long of posts… in short Hunters, Rogues, warriors, and every other class is a hero long before 55 since hero does not mean Superman or Wolverine… heck the person that pulls the drowning kid out of the pool is a local hero…

yet some how unfortunately the word hero most people think comic book heros and not their town heros. You saving redridge from the orcish invation makes you a hero, you bringing down the person who is creating worgs and plaguing your people with a diease that makes them human by day but Werewolf by night in the depths of Shadowfang makes you a hero to silverpine… pretty much any quest you do is a heroic act and killing any boss that has lore that they are hurting your people is also heroic…

The term hero class just means that you have already proved your worth to your side in your pre game life.. just so happens that DKs are not exaulted with all their factions races because the people lost trust in them due to them being forced to work for the liche king… so to re gain your rep you need to do heroic quests for your faction again, but in your former life you had already proved your worth to your faction.

ok they are trying to justify nerfing a character we had to earn.
i remember a company that did the same.
    sony.
they nerfed jedi, nerfed jedi, till nge came & killed swg.
jedi we had to earn, & was supposed to be the elite class of swg.
beep newsflash now you just creat a jedi & they are weak.
now blizzard has pulled a sony.
dk was awsome when i first got my wotlk. i was already lvl 70 war.
so when i made my dk i actually had quite a few parties full of dk lvling with me. i friggin loved it, then sploosh nerfed. lil at the time because a buncha people decide to rant & rave bout dk being op.
    alls i can say is…….ELITE CLASS…..
now how is it elite if im the same as my war? its not.
they have made dk (as of last time i logged in) so unapealing its ashame, the soloability has left the class (before you could solo easier) now because dk are so hated it was difficult to find a good group, your not quite a tank, your not quite a dps, your not quite a ranged, your not quite a pet controller. your a hybrid, a hated hybrid at that. a weaker hybrid because of it.
i suppose sony & blizzard have decided to give elite a new meaning.

You must be really terrible with your DK if you cant out dps your warrior. L2P. Nerfed or not, we are still HIGHLY competitive (if not better) than most pure classes. Stop expecting blizzard to hand you a silver platter of loot and focus on learning your class. Both your guild, and your own playing experience will benefit because of it.
