----------------------------------------------
Original Beginning of thread:
----------------------------------------------

So in this thread, I wanted to create a rune interface with the same runes I have in my avatar.  I started poking around the code of the awesome EbonBlade UI and realized that it would probably serve the DK.i community better if I did a rune ui with vectorvixen's  Contest Blood Rune Contest Frost Rune Contest Unholy Rune Contest Death Rune runes instead.

Here's what I have so far.  This is the Ebon Blade graphic with vv's runes in place:

There's also the option to remove the sword graphic, if you want an easier to see interface:

Here's the option that I think really makes the mod shine; putting the sword and runes right down where you are already looking.  I also customized the cooldown imagery so that it starts blackend, and a little flame appears and traces the outline of the rune.  The trace gives an indication of how much time is left until cooldown is over.  It looks really great in game so far (only have the graphics for  Contest Blood Rune done so far).  Here you see the cooldown for the first rune has less to go than the second:

(looks better in-game, I swear; damn JPGs!)

And then, to really indicate that the rune is refreshed, I have it pop out and back to normal again, which has been a really effective signal:

So that's what I've got so far.  I hope to have vectorvixen and Kenzi's blessing to put it out for everyone with the DeathKnight.info moniker on it, and I hope you guys would enjoy using it.

Outstanding issues:

No Rune Power Indicator
It would be nice to have an indicator of the rune power below the player, but I wanted to leave it up to you guys where I should go with it.  A simple bar over the light interface would do, but what about with the sword graphic?  Trace the blade edge?  Something down the center?  What?

Sword Graphic
Does the EbonBlade look okay?  Should I use Frostmourne or another sword instead?  I kind of want to throw the alpha sword and axe images in there for flavor, but they would look horrible/incomplete when switched down to below the player.

Unholy and Death colors
Contest Unholy Rune and  Contest Death Rune were designed before the final color scheme was decided.  I've considered changing them to the green and purple we know today, but then it clashes with these forums.  Kinda torn here.

Any feedback is appreciated.  This UI is intended for all of us afterall.  (people read the Mods and Macros and UI's board... right? )

I'd love to test it out, if you ever need a hand with it. (Always loved those contest runes!)
Would you have a Downloadable link to this latest UI mod?

From the looks of the screenshots, having the artwork of the sword set in the background of everything would prevent having a side of the hild enter the Player Frame's face. But... seems like the PlayerImage is on a different coding than the rest of the PlayerFrame's frame.

For the Swords/Axes:

Frostmournes tends to be way too big when not ajusted in size, and it's details being overly lost and messy when reduced in to fit on the UI. And then trying to fit visible Runes in there... no longer supperb to look at.  undecided

I've always liked our runes much better than the ones Blizz gives us, personally I think our color scheme is a thousand times better as well. DO NOT CHANGE THESE!

Comments:

If you're going to use a sword, stick with the Rune Sword. Frostmourne is over used and as stated earlier, a bit bulky. It gets in the way more than it accents, which I think all good UIs should aim for.

Personally if I were to use it, I'd probley go bladeless and have them low and center, right under where my character stands, instead of under the nameplate.

Suggestions:

Theres a few UIs already floating around that uses the under-the-player type apperance that I think most DKs have established is a prefered way to go, and I know I'm not being any help here, but theres one in particular that I've really liked, but it uses Blizzs runes instead of the DK.i ones.

I almost cant stand those runes... seriously

The mere fact that you are making a UI that uses the better runes sets you above and beyond the others, and for this I thank you. Let me see if I can get a screen shot of a few of the UIs I've seen that have really worked well so far, and post them on here. This really isnt much of a suggestion without those I guess...

Great work so far man, keep it up.

And...

If you truly want to have a step-up on other mods, try to add the Animated Character Portraits that's currently in X-perl and i think even Perl Classic. Tottaly and only for added flavor and uniqueness. (And please keep the Blizz health/runic bars. ^_^)

The animated portraits paired with the Contest Runes and Runeblade will make it all extremely nice.

Here's an alternative to the RuneBlade overlapping on the character portrait image:
Simply cut off the Bronze arrow-like Hiltguards from the sword's Image File. I always thought the hilt was too big anyway.

Yes it would be a bit sloppy but, since i'm not a programmer i have no idea how to hard it is to make the Runeblade stick in the Background while letting everything overlap it. Though i'm not too sure if just adding the 3D Faces will solve this on it's own.

Edit: Added the X-perl link to the above text.

Thanks to the EbonBlade code that already exists, the no-sword format of the second image also can be dropped down below the player.

Theres a few UIs already floating around that uses the under-the-player type apperance that I think most DKs have established is a prefered way to go, and I know I'm not being any help here, but theres one in particular that I've really liked, but it uses Blizzs runes instead of the DK.i ones.

I'm sure you're speaking of RuneWatch.  I think I read somewhere on Curse that his intention was to allow custom rune graphics in a future build.

I almost cant stand those runes... seriously

I can't at all.  That's my major motivator for doing this.  I believe vectorvixen's runes are so awesome, I voted for her's in the contest instead of the ones I submitted!

If you truly want to have a step-up on other mods, try to add the Animated Character Portraits [...]

If the animated mod could work in conjunction with the DKi mod, I would rather they stay separate.  That way, not only will updates happen more frequently (important during patches), but users can better customize their experience.

Here's an alternative to the RuneBlade overlapping on the character portrait image:
Simply cut off the Bronze arrow-like Hiltguards from the sword's Image File. I always thought the hilt was too big anyway.

Cut the hilt!  I'd rather figuring out the layering instead.

I personally wouldn't mind seeing that with frostmourne, just to see how it is if you could Cheesy

To all the Frostmourne comments, the only reason I brought it up is because of dksz's awesome sig image:

It just seemed like the right size for the AddOn and almost has a Runic Power meter running down the middle...  But of course, I'm not limited to one sword image.  I'll throw a couple in there so people can mix and match with whatever they want.

Great work so far man, keep it up.

Thanks.  smiley

You know, I used to have a website, but I let my subscription slip when I realized my blog was boring as hell.  So no, I have no place to host any files.  Are there imageshack-like sites out there that host files for free?

When I'm done, I hope to put in on Curse.  I'm hoping the open source licensing extends to basically allow me to rape the EbonBlade mod.  (download that for the time being for a basic feel of what I'm going for)

What i'm thinking, and even linking here, is why not use the Ebon Blade itself for the UI? You could edit out the existing runes on said blade, and I think it'd look rather kick-ass.

You may be on to something there....  The contrast between blade and rune would be nice, a global coodown indicator or runic power number could fill the "jewel", and runic power could go down the lines.  I'll think about it!

Make the circular gem in the hilt glow when the RP is full would be a nice touch too.  Sort of have it flash out at you then glow.   Though its not like RP sits at full for long it would be just a nice little touch of uniqueness.

Honestly a number for RP in the jewel, with that blade and the 6 runes like  Contest Blood Rune Contest Frost Rune Contest Unholy Rune and something to let them switch to  Contest Death Rune would be utterly awesome.

Maybe have it as something apart from the character Icon so it could be moved to where you wanted it.

And maybe keep the color of the runes on the blade the same for the contrast and have the symbols be different?

I'm thinking the same thing.   Head Banger

If you look at my third image, you'll see that you will have the option to display both with and without sword graphics below your character.

Finished smoothing out the  Contest Blood Rune animation over the weekend, and I'm starting to work on  Contest Frost Rune now.
