Dancing Rune Weapon for threat?

I saw someone in a Tank Spot post claim that recently Dancing Rune Weapon was changed to provide more threat. I just saw that claim repeated here so I wanted to try a quick test to see if it might be true.
I went to Icecrown to attack Pustulent Horrors there. I wanted to use Omen and minimize the attacks on the mob. I started with trying to use just one Heart Strike then turning away. This works fairly well and if done as well as possible results in one Heart Strike and one melee strike. I would then get a full bar of RP and run up and hit DRW right before Heart Strike, then run away. Later I decided to just do one melee strike. I also found I had to click off DRW some times. Oddly enough it seems like it would keep auto-attacking even if I didn't. As soon as I finished it, I look at Omen as I was running away. I know this isn't very scientific but I'm not sure if there is an easier and quicker way to test it.
For just the melee hits, here is what I found.
1408 melee hit was 3.0k threat
1322 (73 blocked) melee with a 1006 DRW melee was 3.8k threat
1223 melee with a 931 DRW melee was 3.5k threat
1477 melee was 3.1k threat
Based on my quick testing it does seem like threat was noticably higher when DRW was active. A melee hit alone usually resulted in a little more than double the threat. With DRW active I do see more threat but the DRW weapon does not appear to have a threat multiplier on it.
If DRW gives you threat but the DRW weapon doesn't get the threat multiplier then it's possible it could increase your threat by 25% for 12 seconds. Using Hysteria and such could boost that a little more.
One last note on the DRW auto attack as it kind of adds to the proof that something is going on here. If I used DRW then hit a mob and turned to run but didn't click off the DRW buff, then I would see that it kept auto-attacking even though I wasn't. Omen showed my threat on the mob increasing by about the amount of the auto-attack hit.

This is very interesting, once realms are back up I want to test this for myself.

I do not remember seeing anything about this in any patch notes, but your testing seems valid. If you weren't dotting up the mobs, there shouldn't be any threat generation if you aren't personally hitting them, or using a damage shield of some sort. I may have to do some testing as well (but I tend to forget about things like that because I'm bad).

I'll try to re-test it but I did not see nor can I think of any other reason why the threat would vary. I'm hoping a few more tests should rule out anything odd. I'm not seeing any procs in the logs besides Scent of Blood but since I don't ever hit them more than the one time, I don't think it should be changing my threat. I don't know of any reason why just proc'ing SoB would radically change the threat on the mob. The difference has been 1k of threat which matches the damage done by the rune weapon.
It's interesting although since the rune weapon damage doesn't get the higher threat modifier it may not provide the threat boost we'd like. It's also not something you can easily use on the pull. It would have to wait until you get the RP. It could have value but I don't think it will help on the first few seconds of a pull.

I'm thinking more about the possible AoE advantages Kuren. Extra Blood Boil hits would be awesome.

Hmm, this is where perhaps I haven't thought it through. I guess it makes sense that the rune weapon would also use the same AoE moves. That does add additional value then. Just remember that if what I'm seeing is correct then it will only do around 25% of the threat you get yourself since it's at 50% damage already plus it doesn't seem to get the threat increase. That's still a boost to AoE threat though.
I've never tried it. Does the rune weapon also apply pestilence and drop D&D if you do?

Not sure on DnD, but yes it spreads diseases. I think it will DnD, but I will have to test that.

Update: I have just tested this now that my realm is up, and I can confirm that DRW Is giving Threat.
Edit: I asked my Unholy friend to test Gargoyle, apparently it also gives Threat to the player now.

I should point out again that the rune weapon doesn't not get tank threat. The threat it gets appear to be around 100% of damage done and not 200%+ like you would get.
Although I wonder if the rune weapon auto-attack would have some advantages? If you move close enough to start it and then run away, it keeps attacking that mob and giving you threat even if you aren't attacking it. It might work well when you are kiting a mob such as slimes on Rotface or maybe zombies on Dreamwalker?

I just tried gargoyle and DRW, and it does transfer threat. It doesn't work with your ghoul though (thought I'd give it a try since i was testing the others
).

I tested this tonight in my 10 man IC run. Hard to back this up with no addon that really shows threat values in real time however I did notice a threat increase when I popped DRW. Could this just be a bug with the game? I have been searching the forums for blue post about this but have come up empty handed.

Awesome!
Where's Frost's rp-dumping extra threat ability? Don't you dare say FS.
